Scott Porter was reportedly one of the top candidates to wield the shield before Chris Evans won the title role of "Captain America: The First Avenger," but the "Friday Night Lights" veteran and noted comic book fan is getting a shot at another popular Marvel hero.

Porter is leading the voice cast for Marvel's new "X-Men" anime series, set to premiere the first of its 12 half-hour episodes on G4 on Friday, October 21. The actor will step into the role of Scott Summers, better known by his X-Men code name Cyclops, for the anime.

According to a press release from G4, the plot for the anime is as follows:

In the series, the X-MEN are reunited following the death of a teammate, and are summoned by Charles Xavier to track down Hisako Ichiki, a missing teenage girl in Northern Japan. There, they encounter the fanatical and anti-mutant group, U-MEN, and discover what was important enough for Xavier to bring them back together. The answer is something that could potentially bridge the gap between mutants and humans, or tear the two species apart forever.

Based on a promotional image, we can see Scott's X-Men lineup consists of Wolverine, Storm, Beast, Armor and the bald one himself. That leaves a lot of possibilities for the team's fallen comrade — any guesses as to who it might be?

"X-Men" comes hot on the heels of the recent "Wolverine" and "Iron Man" anime series, both of which aired on G4 this past summer.
